The Wall Street Journal's Loretta Chao, one of the participants at SPRIE's "China 2.0" conference in Beijing, covered the event's panel on social media for the Journal's "China Realtime Report." Panelists at the conference covered the problem of censorship and its effect on social networking, the opportunities or lack of for foreign companies wishing to compete in this space, and the possibility of Chinese homegrown innovation in social media.

SPRIE's "China 2.0" conference in Beijing examines e-commerce in china

in the news: The Wall Street Journal on October 20, 2010

As reported by the Wall Street Journal's Loretta Chao, one of the speakers on the e-commerce panel at "China 2.0: The Rise of a Digital Superpower," Deutsche Bank analyst Alan Hellawell gave his firm's predictions on how e-commerice in China is going to shape up. By 2013, according to Hellawell, the percentage of online transactions in the retail space will go up to 7.2%, higher than the percentage of U.S. online retail commerce. Furthermore, Hellawell noted that companies wanting a piece of this business will have to meet high service standards that Chinese consumers have grown accustomed to in a short time.

Head of China Mobile's research division outlines advances, cautions on challenges

Presenting a keynote address at SPRIE's "China 2.0" conference in Beijing, China Mobile Research Institute's General Manager Bill Huang touted the carrier's coverage and performance as superior to that of the largest carrier in the U.S., AT&T. Huang also discussed the challenges that will be facing the mobile industry in China and elsewhere, such as the trend toward data usage exceeding voice usage.

Koo touted Youku's unique partnerships as one way the Chinese company is more innovative than its Western counterparts.

Youku's business model will allow it to be more profitable than YouTube, says CEO Victor Koo

The Chinese video sharing site Youku, using a business model emphasizing media partnerships rather than focusing on user sharing like its Western counterpart YouTube, will achieve greater profitability and be better positioned to take advantage of China's competitive advantage, according to CEO Victor Koo. Koo made the remarks at SPRIE's "China 2.0" conference, where he also announced a new partnership with Disney for streaming video. (Article in Chinese).

China 2.0 reconnects SLAC and IHEP computer scientists after 17 years

Seventeen years ago, the first public internet connection was established between computer scientists at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and Beijing's Institute of High-Energy Physics (IHEP). China now has 400 million online and 750 million mobile consumers and recruits web talent from Silicon Valley for its growing number of innovative web-based technology companies. The two SLAC and IHEP computer scientists who helped to set in motion China's rise as an online power will be reconnected at the commencement of the China 2.0: The Rise of a Digital Superpower conference to be held October 18-19, 2010 in Beijing. Organized by the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE), China 2.0-Beijing is the second part of a conference held May 24-25, 2010 at Stanford University. SPRIE Researcher Robert Eberhart addresses PhilDev USA Business Forum

SPRIE Researcher Robert Eberhart spoke on economic growth strategies at the Philippine Development Foundation USA's "PhilDev USA Business Forum" on September 25 in San Jose. The forum, held to discuss solutions to the Philippines' most pressing development problems, was attended by Filipino and Filipino-American professionals and thought leaders, including Philippine President Benigno ("Noynoy") Aquino III and members of the Philippine senate. Eberhart's presentation, "The Philippines in the New Asian Economic Dynamic," was given as part of a session on "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" and is available for download on the SPRIE website.

In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, SPRIE Co-Director Henry Rowen looks to 1970s New York City for a solution to California's current budgetary crisis. While then-president Gerald Ford refused a federal bailout of the bankrupt city, in the end Washington did provide assistance. California needs help, Rowen argues, but not without reform, and an unconditional bailout will only delay that needed reform. Read more »

On February 23, a standing-room-only crowd filled the Bechtel Conference Center to attend "Solving the Global Leadership and Talent Equation," a seminar presented by SPRIE as part of Entrepreneurship Week 2009 at Stanford University.
