William F. Miller honored by California-Asia Business Council

in the news

On November 21, 2008, SPRIE's Dr. William F. Miller was one of three recipients of the California-Asia Business Council's "2008 New Silk Road" award. Miller, along with Squire, Sanders & Dempsey Senior Counsel Alexander D. Calhoun and Ambassador Linda Tsao Yang, were recognized by the Council as "The Three Venerables" because of their long involvement in and extensive knowledge of US-Asia commercial relationships. John Hagel and Henry Chesbrough deliver keynote addresses at "The Shape of Things to Come" conference

John Hagel, co-author of The Only Sustainable Edge , and Dr. Henry Chesbrough, author of Open Innovation, were keynote speakers at "The Shape of Things to Come: New Patterns and Paradigms in Global Innovation Networks." The keynotes bookended the forum, which included sessions on internet services in China and venture capital's role in network building, and featured speakers and participants from the U.S., Asia and Europe. Min Zhu seminar and SEN launch kick off SPRIE's fall quarter

SPRIE kicked off the fall quarter with two special events: first was a seminar on October 9 presented by Min Zhu, co-founder of WebEx, who spoke on "Beyond Beijing and High Tech: Chinese Entrepreneurship on the Edge"; then, on October 10, Martin Eberhard, Tesla Motors' Co-Founder and President of Technology, spoke at the launch of the Stanford Entrepreneurship Network, a federation of organizations, including SPRIE, that focus on entrepreneurship across the Stanford campus. Writing in the Far Eastern Economic Review, SPRIE co-director Henry Rowen discusses the formation of information technology clusters and how governments in Asia may help or hinder them. His piece, "The Curious Life of Clusters," argues that success for Asian clusters needs "national rules that encourage entrepreneurship, openness to foreign connections of various kinds and support for research."

The rise of China: changing patterns of global innovation and entrepreneurship

A new era is under way for global high-technology innovation and entrepreneurship, marked by the rise of Greater China. During the past several decades, Taiwan, Singapore, and others have developed as centers in key information communications technology (ICT) industries. More recently, from Beijing to the Pearl River Delta, markets for new products are expanding, competencies in new technologies are growing, and a new generation of high-technology regions is emerging.
