Research Interests
Development of new information infrastructures, technology development, and global changes in business strategy.


Dr. William F. Miller has spent about half of his professional life in business and about half in academia.

He was the last faculty member recruited to Stanford University by the legendary Frederick Terman who was then Vice President and Provost of Stanford. Miller, himself, later became Vice President and Provost of Stanford (1971-1979). He conducted research and directed many graduate students in Computer Science. Prior to Stanford he was Director of the Applied Mathematics Division at the Argonne National Laboratory. There he was actively engaged in developing computational science.

In 1968 Dr. Miller also played a role in the founding of the first Mayfield Fund (venture capital) as a special limited partner and advisor to the general partners. He became the Herbert Hoover Professor of Public and Private Management in the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1979.

As President and CEO of SRI International (1979-1990) Miller opened SRI to the Pacific Region, he established the spin-out and commercialization program at SRI and established the David Sarnoff Research Center (now the Sarnoff Corporation) as a for-profit subsidiary of SRI. He became the Chairman and CEO. In 1982 Miller was appointed to the National Science Board .He has served on the board of directors of several major companies such as Signetics, Firemans Fund Insurance, Wells Fargo Bank, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Varian Associates, WhoWhere? Inc. (Chairman), and Borland Software Corp. (Chairman). He co-founded SmartValley,Inc. and helped create CommerceNet and serves on the board of directors. Dr. Miller was a founding director of the Center for Excellence in Non-profits. He currently is a Founder /Chairman of Nanostellar Inc., and Founder/Chairman of Lumiette, Inc..

Dr. Miller is a Life Member of the National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Life Fellow of IEEE, Okawa Prize 2000(Japan), DongBaeg Medal from Republic of Korea 2000,and Member of the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame 2001, David Packard Civic Entrepreneur Award 2008, New Silk Road Award from the California Business Council 2008. Konkuk University, Seoul Korea, established the William F. Miller School of Management of Technology on March 3, 2009. Miller becomes Honorary Dean.
Miller received the BS(1949), MS(1951), PhD (1956) and Honorary DSc (1972) from Purdue University.

Dr. Miller works with cheetahs in the wild in Namibia at the Cheetah Conservation Fund Namibia, and is on the Board of Advisors of the Wildlife Conservation Network.
